Pelosi Calls Health Care Critics 'Un-American'

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi turned the health care debate up a notch Monday, penning a column along with her top deputy that questioned the patriotism of those disrupting town hall meetings to air their complaints.
Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer claimed such behavior is "simply un-American."
It's hardly the first time Pelosi, who earlier this year accused the CIA of lying to Congress and repeatedly has called Republicans unpatriotic, has employed some serious name-calling to characterize her opponents' views.
The jab Monday drew swift scorn from Republicans and critics who say the health care demonstrations are as American as apple pie.
"I, like most Americans, would find that kind of characterization of citizens exercising their First Amendment rights to be offensive," Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., told FOX News. "There's nothing more American than letting your elected representatives know how you feel about important issues facing the nation."
House Republican Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, released a statement calling the charge "outrageous and reprehensible."
Pelosi and Hoyer made the accusation as part of a lengthy column in USA Today stressing the need for action on health care reform. The piece was published as lawmakers return to their districts for summer recess, a period that could imperil the legislation if health care critics cause moderate Democrats to lose their stomachs for sweeping reform.
Critics have confronted lawmakers about the bills, sometimes shouting at them, at a number of town halls in the past week alone.
On Monday, Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill tried a new tack in rebutting the protesters while also minimizing their complaints. She got several hands when she asked audience members at a town hall meeting to raise their hands if they're so scared about the federal government running health care that they "can't think straight."
For Pelosi and Hoyer, they charged that an "ugly campaign" is afoot to misrepresent the legislation, "disrupt" the public meetings and prevent members of Congress from "conducting a civil dialogue" on the topic.
"Let the facts be heard," they wrote. "These disruptions are occurring because opponents are afraid not just of differing views -- but of the facts themselves. Drowning out opposing views is simply un-American. Drowning out the facts is how we failed at this task for decades." ...

Minority Education Grants
Published on August 6, 2009
Minority education grants are free money offered to minority students to help them pay for school and educational expenses, such as the cost of tuition, to pay for the books, student housing and so on. Minority education grants are the perfect solution to the financial problems of the people belonging to minority community and helps to a great extent to uplift them educationally, socially and economically.
The most attractive part of minority education grant is that it never has to be repaid, once it has been received and it is also possible to receive the grant every semester, again and again, irrespective of the grade points.
To qualify for a minority education grant, the person has to be a part of the minority group such as Hispanics, native north Americans and African north Americans . It is also needed that the applicant be a certified U.S. citizen and a valid social security number.
It is not only the government but there are other private organizations and foundations that offer education grants for minority students. Racial discrimination is a curse in the society and it is sad that it still prevails in some parts of the country where the minorities are victims of it.
To make them get into the mainstream and live a better life, the government has taken the right step of providing educational grants to minority students that would help them a long way in coming out of their cocoon and fly great heights.

Nine-year-old Bianca Herlory can strike up a conversation in French, Portuguese, Spanish or English, and recently expressed an interest in learning Mandarin.
"It's a gymnastic of the mind," said her mom, Stephanie Herlory, who introduced her daughter to foreign languages at a young age. "Once they're immersed, it comes very quickly."
As demands increase for a global work force, a growing number of South Florida parents are taking steps to make sure their children learn a second language. Many moms and dads have declared their homes "No English" zones. Some opt to send their kids to language immersion schools.
Bilingual parents are not the only ones driving the trend. Parents who speak only English are getting in on it as well.
John Melnick, of Pompano Beach, enrolled his sons, Daniel, 6, and Jonny, 4, in the Lycée Franco-Américain in Cooper City, a private, K-8 school that teaches all classes in French. His wife had done research on the school and liked the French system.
"I thought at first that there would be serious disadvantages to putting my children into a school where they speak in another language," Melnick said. "I'm getting quite an education."

Jennifer Moody reports that the Albany Public School District has recently formed a committee to develop additional bilingual classes at the elementary level in order to accommodate the increasing number of students who speak a language other than English. The plan is to establish a pilot program by fall of 2009 or 2010. In the future, committee members will be deciding whether a dual language program or a one-way instruction program will be most effective within the district. ELL coordinator Ellen Carlson is in favor of bilingual education. Carlson, who has been influenced by research, believes "being able to study concepts first in their native tongue, then in English, leads to quicker mastery of both concept and language."
